What we do
...

The Cooking Academy teaches people how to prepare and cook food from around the world in a professional, enthusiastic, creative and enjoyable way.  We are unique in our approach to cookery by putting ingredients and their beneficial health properties at the heart of everything we teach.

We run a wide range of publicly available classes, social events for families and groups of friends.  We also have an extensive corporate client-base for whom we provide team-building events as well as corporate entertainment & hospitality events.

Our cookery school classes are entirely hands-on and taught by expert chefs in a home-from-home kitchen environment.  Our ethos is to explain the chemical composition, Ayurvedic and herbal values of food so that recipes are nutritionally rich, look visually appealing, and taste divine.  Our cookery classes and corporate events will change your perspective of food with a teaching methodology that makes no assumptions of your starting position, but rather takes you by the hand on a journey of discovery, peppered with lots of hints and tips to give a technical understanding of why certain processes are necessary in cooking to broaden your knowledge.

Our recipes are straightforward to replicate at home and we always use fresh, ethically-sourced ingredients.  We work in small groups so that the personal relationship with your chef and your fellow students can add to the richness of the day, whilst ensuring that everyone receives the right amount of one-to-one tutoring and the full attention of the chef taking the class.

We aim to be second to none in our marketplace, where you truly have a wonderful experience as well as learn skills that you can use for many years to come.

“The tutor was really knowledgeable about food of every kind. I’ve learnt so much in one day it’s incredible. Thank you for your encouragement and humour – I’ve had a really fun day. Can’t wait to do another day.”  Christine Wagner

“I just wanted to say thanks for a lovely experience today. It has sparked a much-needed bit of inspiration that I have been lacking. The presentation, the information and background and the recipes were all perfect!! I can’t wait to get my spices and start delighting my family and friends.”  Lynn Coleman

“I would like to thank you for a hugely enjoyable and informative day. My family really enjoyed the food I prepared; even my son Arthur who is autistic and very particular about food absolutely loved it. My wife who is pregnant thought the food was amazing. I don’t know if it was my cooking or your expert tuition, probably a bit of both, and thank you for your kind comments regarding my cooking. I’d be very interested to come back for one of your Thai courses and will be giving polite hints to relatives on the approach to Xmas and my birthday. Hope to see you again soon.”  Dave Stern

THE BACKGROUND STORY
...

The school was founded in 2008 by Kumud Gandhi.  Kumud’s inspiration has its roots in both her mother’s family, who are chemists in India, and her father’s, who are spice merchants. This blend of science and an appreciation of spices stimulated her unique approach to food, which led to her expertise in cooking with herbs and spices for nutritional and medicinal benefit and, what she calls, her ‘Alchemy of Food’.

Kumud started her career in the corporate world, working in Finance and marketing, yet food was always at the forefront of her daily life and interests.  In 2006, with two young children, Kumud decided to leave the world of suits and city offices and took the opportunity to combine her love of cooking and tasty, healthy food by researching food science at The London Food Centre, putting her life’s passion into practice.

Now, with a decade of professional experience in food and nutrition under her belt, Kumud works daily to combine the benefits of great tasting food with high nutritional value through cookery classes at the Academy, corporate events and seminars with her team of chefs.  Her aim is to educate others in the ways of creating vibrant, flavoursome, body-benefiting foods that both replenish our immune systems and keep the heart healthy.

Kumud built her reputation by catering for many well-known clients including The Prince of Wales, Madonna, The Royal Academy and Fashion TV. Her status as ‘The Spice Queen’ (a nickname coined by Nick Coffer at the BBC) and the fact that many of her clients asked about cookery lessons for themselves or for their chefs was the impetus to create The Cooking Academy.  Now Kumud’s expertise is not only shared with class attendees and radio listeners, her food and teachings can be found regularly on national television and press!

Our teaching chefs’ background and understanding of food is a combination of professional training, a passion for food and a desire to share their knowledge with others. They include Hulya Erdal, Anna Samavat, Pooja Nagendra, Gavin Maureemootoo and of course Kumud Gandhi.

We hope to share our love of food with you at The Cooking Academy sometime soon.

“Thanks again for a lovely day yesterday, I have to say I don’t often rave about things, so Lindsay, my wife, was surprised and pleased (as it was her gift to me) that I came back so enthused by the day. I have surprised myself with how much I got out of the day and how much I am looking forward to re-creating the dishes. Well done! You have a gift!”  Don Booth
