Delicious perky Plums
These wonderful perky plums come from the same family as peaches, nectarines and Almonds. They are in season in the UK from late May to September. Plums are a great source of Vitamin A, K and Vitamin C, and are an excellent source of fibre. They are very low saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium so plums are excellent for weight loss as they only contain 46 calories per 100g. Plums also contain compounds called Sorbitol and Isatin that are known to regulate the digestive system and therefore good for relieving constipation.
Nutritional benefits of plums
Plums also contain minerals such as potassium, fluoride and iron which is very good for red blood cell formation, and potassium helps to regulate blood pressure. The orange coloured plums have higher levels of beta carotene and anti oxidants.
With so many excellent reasons to eat plums my suggestion is to snack on them during the day whilst their in season and at their peak, however if that doesn’t take your fancy then try my plum pudding recipe – it’s a bit of a summer crumble dish really.
