Star Anise has a highly aromatic liquorice flavour, bearing a similar flavour to fennel and basil. It pairs well with pork, duck rice and fish and is a component part of garam masala and chinese five spices.
In Indian cooking it provides great flavour to biriyani and lamb dishes in particular; Star Anise is renowned for its use in vietnamese pho a soup noodle dish, it is of course indigenous to Vietnam. Use Star Anise sparingly as it releases flavour slowly and can easily over power a dish if over used.
China and Vietnam are the biggest producers of high grade Star Anise. Our Star Anise is sourced from the southern China region.
